Read and in the black: East Asian newspapers are freer - to compete

Article Abstract:

Competition among East Asian newspaper companies intensified due to the greater press freedom in South Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines. This competitiveness has forced the companies to spend increasing amounts of money on advertising and on improving their capital equipment and distribution networks. Competition with other media such as satellite television is also a factor. The five leading East Asian newspaper groups are Hongkong's South China Morning Post, Malaysia's New Straits Times, the Singapore Press Holdings and Thailand's Nation Publishing and Post Publishing.
