Suharto reverses policy: some public-works plans allowed to proceed

Article Abstract:

President Suharto recently introduced a decree which authorizes the developers of 15 construction projects to carry on with their operations. These projects, which involve the construction of 8 power plants, a toll road and an airport, were actually included in the 150 projects which the President previously ordered to be postponed or withheld. The decision did not only cast doubts on Suharto's leadership capabilities, but also raised questions on his commitment to reduce government spending on construction projects.

Indonesian budget sticks to spending, tax priorities

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's budget for 1995 repeats its 1994 guidelines: minimize spending and increase tax collection. Infrastructure and education are the spending priorities indicated in the draft budget presented by Pres. Suharto. The Indonesian government hopes to avoid the chances that the economy would overheat as it did in 1990 and 1991. The new budget shows that the government expects to incur continued gains in tax revenue.
