Svyazinvest, Rostelcom weigh merger, Soros says

Article Abstract:

Billionaire George Soros said that Svyazinvest and RAO Rostelecom are engaged in negotiations over a possible merger. Both companies are the two largest telephone firms in Russia. Mr. Soros said that in principle, he supported the proposed deal. An official with Rostelecom acknowledged that merger talks were underway. However, the official cautioned that no deal was near. The deal would help Mr. Soros to regain some of his losses from his Svyazinvest investment in 1997.
