Sweet smell of excess

Article Abstract:

Anti-dumping laws have become a bone of contention between the U.S. and China. Chinese government officials assert that anti-dumping laws discriminate against China. Chinese lawyers argue that China should not be classified as a nonmarket economy in which prices are set by government fiat. In such cases, the Commerce Department calculates the actual costs of production using a surrogate economy, usually India. The Chinese, however, say this does not take into account nonstate producers and other factors such as Hong Kong distributors.

Asian star wars: debate heats up over East Asian missile defence

Article Abstract:

US Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole has come out in support of an integrated ballistic missile defense system that covers the entire East Asia theater. Pres Clinton has opposed such plans and supports localized defense systems like the Patriot systems in place in South Korea. The system that Dole supports, called the Theater High Altitude Area Defense, is being developed by Lockheed Martin. Cost of such comprehensive systems may be prohibitive, and agreement of all Asian nations involved may prove politically infeasible.
