Tadao Ando's Royal Gold Medal Address

Article Abstract:

Architects have a great responsibility to ensure safety and security for ordinary people, according to Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who received the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture on Jun 3, 1997. Function is a key element of architecture, even though architects also like to consider aesthetics and beauty. Architects have come under strong pressure to meet commercial demands, and this has sometimes led them to give insufficient consideration to functionality and safety.
