Taiwan feels China's ire rising as election nears

Article Abstract:

Observers expect Chinese officials to step up the violent rhetoric and threats of war as the date of Taiwan's first-ever presidential election approaches. This escalation in verbal hostility is China's way of curbing the nationalist aspirations of Taiwan, which it considers as a renegade province. Chinese government officials are especially wary of Taiwan Pres. Lee Teng-hui, who has defiantly ignored threats of invasion in his bid to win greater international recognition for the island.

Despite cross-strait tensions, Taiwan investors maintain and boost economic ties with China

Article Abstract:

The rising tension between China and Taiwan has not prevented Taiwanese investors from conducting business in China. An example is Taiwanese businessman Chiao Yu-chi, who recently sank $20 million in investments in Chinese businesses. Chiao's action affirms that recent events between China and Taiwan have not affected their economic ties. This had led many critics to believe that at the heart of the dispute is the greater quest for political power than economic power.

Taiwan firms maintain investments in China in the face of political strife

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese firms are maintaining their investments on the mainland even as the political conflict between China and Taiwan escalates. The conflict has focused primarily on China's displeasure over Taiwan Pres. Lee Teng-hui's moves to gain greater international recognition for the country, which Beijing predicts may eventually lead to independence. Lee was conferred an honorary degree in his Jun. 1995 US visit.
