Taiwan's language of independence

Article Abstract:

There is a growing trend in Taiwan reflecting citizens' desire to be completely independent of China. More politicians and public officials are speaking Taiwanese. The Kuomintang government required Mandarin Chinese in 1949 as part of an long-term goal to recapture control of mainland China.

Taiwan breaks the mould

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's first truly democratic parliamentary elections resulted in the empowerment of the ruling Koumintang's first legitimate opposition, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The DPP won an unprecedented 50 of 161 seats by vigorously favoring continued independence from China.

Oiling palms: Taiwan

Article Abstract:

The public is showing less support for the Kuomintang party in Taiwan since the group has been tied to a kickback scandal involving the Chinese Petroleum Corp. A recent fire destroyed many of the company's records, but several arrests have been made.
