Take an axe: preserving the woods

Article Abstract:

Maine's Green Party and Ban Clearcutting have gotten a referendum to ban clearcutting, which has denuded much of northern Maine, on the state ballot. The paper industry and landowners have raised large funds to oppose it, but welcome the chance to explain the need for clearcutting to Maine's citizens.

The Chechnyan peace accord negotiated by deposed Russian security chief Alexander Lebed seems to be taking hold. Aslan Maskhadov, prime minister of the transitional government who will run against rebel Pres Zelimkhan Yandarbiev in Jan 1997 elections, may be more likely to keep the peace.
