Taking up the challenge

Article Abstract:

The City Challenge scheme has led to achievements in urban regeneration and the formation of partnerships. However the competitive element of the scheme has been criticised as many of the losers committed major resources which may have been used in other areas. The Harlesden City Challenge aims to break the cyle of deprivation and under-achievement in the region and overall targets are being met. Leicester's City Challenge has undertaken almost 100 listed environmental improvements, refurbised houses and improved estates.

Challenge for the universities

Article Abstract:

Universities are committed to ensuring that people achieve their potential in life and are often seen as sharing the same cultural values as architecture. Both disciplines have to juggle with limited resources to build a balanced end-product whilst at the same time achieving excellence. Funding is based on perceived value, which for universities and architecture alike, depends upon whether the projects fulfil their objectives.
