Taming media monsters

Article Abstract:

Media companies tend to have protection from imports from abroad, which may involve quotas for TV programming and prohibitions on media companies being owned by foreigners. There are also regulations affecting ownership of TV companies by newspapers, and vice-versa. Some regulations are out-dated and counter-productive. Single firms are less able to dominate news production, and there is strong demand for local content, while production costs have dropped, so more companies can compete in the media industry. This means that there is less need for regulation.

Still thinking: media ownership in Europe

Article Abstract:

Germany and the UK have been reviewing their laws on cross-ownership of media, but neither is likely to meet a spring deadline for recommendations. Britain is likely to raise the stake newspaper are allowed to hold in TV stations, instead of allowing majority ownership.
