The outsider

Article Abstract:

Kim Dae Jung makes his fourth attempt to secure the South Korean presidency in the 1997 election campaign. He allies himself with the conservative United Liberal Democrat party for this election, despite his political history of opposing business and political establishments to the point of persecution for his beliefs. Seventy-four-year-old Kim has run an apparently contradictory campaign, claiming a conversion to free-market ideals whilst promising greater benefits and power to the labour force.

Biting the bullet

Article Abstract:

South Korea's president-elect Kim Dae Jung is being inaugurated on Feb 25, 1998, but is already unofficially involved in solving the country's massive foreign debt problems. Kim has told the leaders of Korea's largest conglomerates that they must use their personal wealth to fund company projects and repay debts, and has also convinced the unions that job losses are necessary in return for government cutbacks and action on social security issues.
