Article Abstract:

Retail tea sales in Germany are estimated at over DM620 million a year, with black tea accounting for around DM360 million of sales. The black tea market is expected to drop marginally or stagnate, while herbal tea sales are likely to increase. Tea consumption is lower in eastern Germany than in the west, with Teekanne and OTG comprising the brand market leaders. Tea imports have increased to a record 37,652 tons in 1996 following the abolition of tea tax in 1993. Tea processing and production is worth around DM650 million-670 million per year.
