Telecom Italia chief will seek accord with RAI, BSkyB

Article Abstract:

Telecom Italia SpA Chairman Gian Mario Rossignolo has been permitted by the firm's board of directors to pursue an agreement with RAI regarding Italy's digital platform. The company may also seek a partnership with British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC. The move marks the enactment of Telecom Italia's long-formulated industrial plan, where its consolidated net profit increased 75% in the first six months of 1997 to 3.2 trillion lire. Italy's digital platform has long been a controversial issue as state officials have not yet decided whether to allow News Corp.'s Rupert Murdoch to enter the country's pay-television industry.
