Telecom Italia may unveil defense plans next week

Article Abstract:

Telecom Italia will probably reveal its strategy for defending the company against a hostile takeover bid from Olivetti. Olivetti has already made a $58 billion offer to acquire Telecom Italia. Company managing director Franco Bernabe will unveil his defense strategy at a company board meeting during the week of March 7-14, 1999. The board has given Mr.Bernabe a full mandate for defending Telecom Italia.

Verizon will sell rural access lines to curb costs

Verizon Communications Inc. will sell off up to 1.2 million access lines in rural areas. The sale is expected to raise approximately $4 billion (4.42 billion euros) for the firm.
