Thailand, Malaysia gear up to begin production of electric-powered vehicles

Article Abstract:

Thailand and Malaysia are planning to begin manufacturing Electric vehicles (EVs) in 1995. Thailand's Pholasith Tuk-Tuk Motors Co. is collaborating with the US-based Advanced Electric Car Technology Inc., while Malaysia's United Motor Works Corp. Sdn. Bhd. and the Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn. Bhd. are collaborating with California's US Electricar Inc. EVs are being promoted as the solution to the worsening pollution problems in many Asian cities. Barriers to their acceptance are the complications of replacing and recharging batteries, the desire of some Asians to show off their wealth and high production costs.

Malaysia sees cool response to low office rents

Article Abstract:

Growth prospects for Malaysia's commercial real estate market appear gloomy as demand for office spaces continue to rise at pervasive levels. According to a research conducted by Jones Lang Wootton consulting firm, 79% of the total office space in Kuala Lumpur has been occupied during the first quarter of 1999. In 1998, the occupancy rate was staged at 80% and it reached a high of 92% in 1997. With an estimated 40 new commercial office projects to be completed by 2001, industry experts believe that the trend would prevail for another two years.
