'The Argentina Factor'

Article Abstract:

Economic troubles in Argentina will have less effect than when Latin American problems spread to Asia in 1997. Argentina recently severed the link between its currency and the U.S. dollar, and fear that the country may default on government debt of $130 billion has resulted in a sharp drop in the Argentine stock and bond markets. The problems have caused some concern that bond and currency markets in Asia will be affected as in 1997, but such fears may be misplaced, since a number of new safeguards are now in place to prevent attacks on Hong Kong and Malaysian currencies, for example, although the Philippines may still be vulnerable.

Countdown to 2000 for Taipei and Washington

Article Abstract:

The US government needs to address the question on Taiwan's sovereignty and China's claims over the country. The volatile political environment in Taiwan has made matters worse. The defeat of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which leads the independence movement has momentarily pleased China. However, DPP may make a strong comeback in the presidential elections in the year 2000. Until then, the US can postpone making a decision on whether or not it will support Taiwan's need for independence.
