The Eastern European market for OTC health care

Article Abstract:

Sales of over-the-counter (OTC) health care products in the Eastern European markets is governed by the health of regional economies. Total sales of OTC health care products in the market amounted to $1,021 mil in 1996, down by 36% from sales in 1992. The decrease is due to the struggling economies in Russia, the Ukraine and Bulgaria, with consumer purchases in Russia and Ukraine falling by as much as 70%. Vitamins and dietary supplements account for fastest sales, amounting to $267.7 mil in 1996. The Eastern Europe OTC health care products market is forecasted to reach $2,204 mil by year 2001, driven by the changes in the health services delivery in the region.

The Finnish market for OTC healthcare

A market research study was conducted on over-the-counter (OTC) drugs in Finland. The market is divided into six categories: analgesics, cough, cold and allergy remedies, digestive remedies, medicated skin care, vitamins and dietary supplements, and other OTC healthcare. Some of the major findings are: that the market was affected by a series of changes at the start of the 1990s, that the market was also influenced by a more flexible legislation with regards to distribution, and that the vitamins and dietary supplements sector is leading.

The Czech Republic OTC market

Analysis of the Czech Republic's market for over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceuticals shows that the OTC products market has grown by 13% since 1991, with per capita expenditure on OTC products also growing by 80.7% from that same year. The vitamins and dietary supplements sector accounts for most of the market's revenues while the medicated skincare sector is the fastest growing. The market is expected to grow by 20.5% at 1995 prices in 1996.
