The development of the German fast food markets, which continues to be regional in nature, is spurned by operators shifting from the mainstream full service catering sector into the fast food market, establishing innovative niches. New concepts in the local fast food market includes Doner-Fabric's franchising concept of selling 16 various kebabs, Dunkin' Donuts plan of opening its first oultet in Berlin, Germany in 1998, Scholtzsky's sandwich fast food chain in Cologne, Germany, New World Coffee & Bagels' plan to open first bagel chain outlet in Munich, Germany, and Metzgerei Klix GmbH's introduction of meat-based specialties.

The German fast food market during 1997 and 2002 is expected to achieve high sales growth with reduced available income and changing lifestyle patterns of Germans. The expected increase in demand for fast foods will be met by an increased number of fast food outlets during the forecast period. The local fast food market is also expected to experience some form of diversification, as German consumers increasingly becomes more international in their tastes. The fast food sector in German will continue to be dominated by the burger segment, followed by the pizza segment.

The increasing competition within the market will shift importance towards quality of service with product innovation expected to speed up as a way to raise each company's competitive edge.
