The cold winds blow

Article Abstract:

Chilean stock prices have dropped, and the economy has been hit by the Asian economic crisis and a drop in the price of copper. Interest rates have been raised to some 14% and a tight budget is planned for 1999. Unemployment could rise to 10% in 1999 compared with 6.4% in 1998. Private sector pension funds have reported losses. The government has yet to introduce a scheme for unemployment insurance. Support for pro-market policies may be reduced with a worsening of economic problems.

Fare trade: quarrels over food safety will blow a hole in free trade unless governments put more trust in science, and in consumers

Food is the sector of foreign trade in which protectionist nations can cheat, by claiming to protect its citizens from unsafe food. World Trade Organization has tightened the rules, but it will take trust in scientific screening and consumers' taste to eliminate bogus unsafe-import claims.
