The curse of Paternoster Square

Article Abstract:

British architect William Whitfield seems to face almost insurmountable challenges in his task of producing a development scheme for the prime Paternoster Square site in the City of London. The site is architecturally sensitive, given its proximity to St Paul's Cathedral, and any plan must seek to reconcile the architectural, commercial, historical and leisure needs of the site. Slightly over four acres of the seven-acre site is owned by Japan's Mitsubishi, which has now contracted Whitfield to draw up a master plan where several others have already failed.

The campaign for real alehouses

Article Abstract:

The Courtyard in Leeds city centre has won a Campaign for Real Ale/English Heritage pub design award because it has been adapted to serve real beer rather than bottled beer, even though its interior design is modern and quite dissimilar to that of a traditional British pub. Architects have debated the essence of pub architecture since the 1950's, and many think that the unpretentious designs of the past have been replaced by modern designs which are characterless in comparison.
