Rumors of rate reduction shake up equity markets

Article Abstract:

China's People's Bank could lower interest rates around July 1, 1997, the day Hong Kong will be handover to China, according to some analysts. The move is seen as China's way of putting a more positive spin on the handover, and with inflation almost at zero, the likelihood of such a move is high. However, officials at the central bank are not commenting on the interest rate cuts. A politically-motivated interest rate reduction could damage the central bank's image as a market-oriented regulator.
