The economic situation in the ECE region in 1995

Article Abstract:

Economic developments in the Economic Commission for Europe region have not met expectations. Western Europe's economic recovery lost momentum, and the US, UK, and Canada experienced an unexpectedly pronounced cyclical downturn. Overall inflationary pressures remained low, despite an upward tendency in year-on-year rates. For North America, Western Europe and Japan in aggregate, real GDP is expected to grow by under 2.5% in 1995. Economic data for eastern Europe and nations of the former Soviet Union is included.

External financial developments in the transition economies

Article Abstract:

The eastern European economies' external financial positions underwent an uneven evolution in the early months of 1995. Higher export earnings helped lower the countries' external debt, and most of the countries were apparently able to attract more private capital, which in turn increased their foreign currency reserves. The external financial positions of the European members of the Confederation of Independent States and of the Baltic states are also discussed.
