The end of the North-South divide?

Article Abstract:

The present recession has primarily affected the south-east of England, rather than industrial northern areas as in previous economic downturns. One reason is that many defence establishments have laid off staff, mostly in the south. Jobs in the financial sector, mostly in the south, have disappeared. There is too much office and industrial space available, which is more costly in the south. House prices have fallen more in the south-east than in other parts of the country.
