The far-right factor: France( National Front and Movement for France right-wing movements)

The far right Movement for France and National Front parties are gaining power in France. The movement is nationalistic, anti-immigrant and opposed to the European Union. Philippe de Villiers, head of the Movement for France is more charismatic than the National Front's Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Jean-Marie Le Pen's National Front party won 15% of the vote in the 1995 presidential election and has made large gains in several local and municipal elections since that time. The party's nationalistic, anti-immigrant ideologies seems to be gaining favor in working class areas.

The significance of the National Front is beginning to wane, indicated by the party's 14% share of votes in recent regional elections. Voters are no longer drawn by the party's scapegoating of immigrants for France's economic woes.
