Article Abstract:

NIgeria's military junta, led by General Sani Abacha, appears to have a firm grasp on power, despite a sharp increase in poverty and a declining human rights environment. An international oil embargo might be able to dislodge the Abacha regime, but few countries appear interested in such sanctions.

Abacha wins

Gen Abacha has made no compromises on human-rights and seems in complete control, one year after the internationally criticized execution of dissident Ken Saro Wiwa. The general has balanced the budget, reduced inflation and has bgeun to privatize utilities and energy companies.
