The maturing market for corporate finance

Article Abstract:

The corporate finance sector in the area around Southampton, England, is having to demonstrate a high level of flexibility as many companies seek to adapt to constant change. There has been a marked maturing of the market for corporate finance services in the region since the end of 1996. This is reflected partly in the wide range of deals being undertaken. MBIs are taking a growing market share, while in the MBO market there has been a move towards institutional buyouts and the use of auctions for relatively small transactions.

Addressing the issue of exit management

Article Abstract:

Private equity houses in the UK have until recently given little attention to establishing a dedicated exit management operation. Indeed, exit management must be given a much higher priority if the private equity industry is to continue to expand. Relying on pressures produced by capital structures serves to reinforce the tendency to view exit management as an unimportant decision compared with dealing with the initial investment process. There has also been too much emphasis on exit by trade sale or flotation.

Cast aside your prejudices, urges new BVCA chairman

Article Abstract:

Tax reforms and greater industry control from within are the main points raised by the new chairman of the British Venture Capital Association, Clive Sherling. There is also a need to improve the use of venture capital assets by pension funds, which only accounts for 10% of raised funds in 1998. Sherling would like to see the government play a more positive role in the UK buyout market by providing greater opportunities for venture capital firms to become involved at all stages of buyouts.
