Who's looking out for our welfare@(corporate self-interest and concern for employees' welfare)

Article Abstract:

Companies are shedding staff at a time when staff quality is seen as a key asset. Meanwhile the state is withdrawing from welfare provision at a time when people need it more due to job insecurity. Companies can emphasize the transactional nature of their dealings with employees who seek self-identity, pensions and other services elsewhere. Such companies may lose employees on a large scale which can be a major problem if their skills are important. Companies can also offer advice and help in areas like pensions and mortgages to foster loyalty, or they may steer a middle way. There are advantages in seeking to foster loyalty among employees.

East of Eden

Article Abstract:

It is common for companies involved in the same industry to be located in the same area. This is particularly the case with the film industry, where most activity takes place in Hollywood. It is clear that human capital tends to remain in one place, and this gives stability to industries where human capital is the key element. This trend has very significant implications for the world's economic structure. It indicates that an industry which has gained a dominant position will become very difficult to dislodge.

Stepping into the unknown

Article Abstract:

US economic growth looks set to slow in 1998 or after since it has risen to unsustainable levels. Mainland Europe faces uncertainties linked to European monetary union (Emu). The United Kingdom is likely to see further interest rate rises and exports could be affected by a global slow-down. The high level of pound sterling has forced many UK companies to change and so has been a beneficial catalyst. There is more pressure to increase productivity and opportunities have been created from uncertainty.
