Breeding for change: Northern Ireland

Article Abstract:

The Catholic population of Northern Ireland is now at 43% and there should be a Catholic majority there within 20 years. It is hoped that their growing numbers will encourage Catholics to abandon their support of the IRA and put more faith in the political process.

Hopes for a peaceful resolution to the Northern Ireland dilemma could depend on the ability of Sinn Fein and the Social Democratic and Labour Party to negotiate. Some in Sinn Fein are seeing the need to distance themselves from the Irish Republican Army.

Starting again in Ulster

Article Abstract:

Recent unrest in Ulster shows that Britain and Ireland cannot count on the cooperation of Northern Ireland politicians to achieve a lasting peace there. A detailed plan, already formulated in 1994, should be put directly to Northern Ireland voters.
