The Liberal Democratic Party gained strength in the latest Japanese elections, though prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto recognizes the need for further political reform. Most essential is further deregulation so that the economy can regain momentum.

Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto is likely to call an election in Oct 1996 rather than wait until the deadline of Jul 1997. The Liberal Democratic Party lost is majority in the Diet in 1993 but stands a good chance of regaining it.
