The politics of productivity

Article Abstract:

The UK government has placed strong emphasis in 1998 on the fact that UK businesses are considerably less productive than their counterparts in other countries, including Germany, the US, and France. Indeed, government ministers have been trying to make businesses bear the responsibility for the country's economic problems. In fact, many different factors influence a country's productivity, and many of these are very complex. It can be argued that politicians are the most important people responsible for national productivity. They tend to manipulate the economy to suit their political purposes, and this has a negative impact on productivity.

Spin doctor in the house

Article Abstract:

The decision by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair to appoint Peter Mandelson as Trade and Industry Secretary would appear to be to the benefit of the business community. However, it is not yet clear whether Mandelson will be able to create a viable role for the Dept of Trade and Industry within a Labour government committed to non-interventionist, free-market economics. It is likely that Mandelson will want to become a key leader in the business world, and he will probably play a significant role in seeking to persuade UK companies of the benefits of the single European currency.
