The shaming of Malaysia

Article Abstract:

The trial of the former Malaysian finance minister, Anwar Ibrahim, raises a number of issues about the legal system and methods by which he has been brought to trial. The police claim to have investigated Anwar since 1992, and if it is true, as prime minister Mahathir Mohamad claims, that he is not fit to be a leader, this raises questions as to why he was permitted to hold a position of power for six years after 1992. The Internal Security Act used to arrest Anwar allows for indefinite detention. Malaysians are not allowed to criticise and can only hold rallies if they have permission, and such measures are too harsh.

Mayor culpa

Article Abstract:

New York City Mayor William Bratton's chances for reelection are good as the two biggest problems of the city, crime and the economy, have been given a temporary reprieve. Crime is largely in the hands of the police commissioner and the economy has been given a boost by the 1996 strength of Wall Street. The city's long term problem of increasing public expenditure, unemployment, high tax rates and low growth rates however remain and threaten to put a damper on reelection hopes.

Mea culpa, and all that

Article Abstract:

Apologetic statements from government officials have a part in the development of the international perceptions of a country since the admittance of certain mistakes enables a country to clean their tarnished reputations. The request for pardon is not costly and it enables conflicts to be resolved. Government officials should realize the role of apologies in resolving diplomatic matters.
