UK independent production companies depend on commissions from the main broadcasters. There are over 1,000 independents in 1997, with an annual turnover of 700 million pounds sterling. The British Broadcasting Corporation has agreed to invest 33% of its programming budget in firms which are not located in London, giving regional producers a better change of success. Channel 4 has remained committed to independent productions since it began broadcasting in 1987.
