Thinking south

Article Abstract:

Malaysia is emerging as the major proponent among the Group of 15 (G15) countries in promoting bilateral trade with southern countries. Aware that the the US and the EC do not take kindly to an economic bloc among developing countries, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad said that the G15 intends to reduce overdependence, not to cut down on trade with the northern countries. Two interesting proposals from Malaysia are the use of Bilateral Payment Agreements and the establishment of a South Investment, Trade and Technology Data Exchange Centre to facilitate trade and investments.

Priming for Rio: Malaysia sets tone for Earth Summit agenda

Article Abstract:

Malaysia took advantage of the South's conference on environmental problems to justify and promote its environmental policy. The signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration by developing nations effectively established the consolidated position to link environmental protection to economic development. This agreement will most likely represent the developing countries' position at the UN 1992 Conference on Environment and Development scheduled for Jun 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This should address and advance the argument for shared environmental protection financing.

Three's company: Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia forge development zone

Article Abstract:

Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia have agreed to form a development zone in a triangle-shaped area encompassing southern Thailand, northern Indonesia and northwestern Malaysia. The area holds some 21 million people, and in 1988 produced $12.4 billion. The zone will encourage private initiatives and minimize bureaucracy; early projects will focus on power and infrastructure. A similar venture in the south began in 1990, but has foundered on government disputes.
