Three mobile phones vie for title of the smallest

Philips Consumer Electronics Div. plans to launch a new cellular telephone unit which it claims is the slimmest unit in the Asian market. Called the Fizz, the unit's depth is only 17 mm. which is flatter than the Ericsson GH 388 and the Motorola MicroTAC 8200. However, the Fizz is slightly bulkier than its two main rivals. Moreover, it is slightly heavier than the MicroTAC 8200 which weighs 149 gms. but lighter than the GH 388 which weighs 170 gms. The Fizz boosts of 290 minutes of talk time compared to only 275 minutes for the GH 388. The unit will be sold in Asia by Jul. 1996 and will cost around $570.

In Thailand's city of angels, cellular devils are lurking

Cellular cloning has been rampant in Thailand with an estimated 4,600 cases which cost Communications Authority of Thailand more than 10 mil baht a year. Thailand's cellular companies are planning to come up with ways on how to handle the cloners. Some of these measures include installation of longer codes on phones, creating personal identification numbers for long-distance calls, and limiting credits of customer's mobile-phone accounts. Cloning a cellular phone is done by using scanning devices to steal electronic serial numbers from legitimate phones.

Affluent Hong Kong residents have begun to choose their cellular phones according to aesthetic standards and the glamor of brand names in the same manner that they buy their clothes, shoes and other fashion items. This trend is prevalent in other fast-developing Asian economies as the fascination with technology merges with the desire to be fashionable. The mobile phone market will definitely respond to this situation with a more varied array of product models.
