Three's a crowd

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom has long hoped to disrupt the close ties between Germany and France which have been a driving force in the European Union (EU). The election of the new German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, appears to offer an opportunity for greater dominance for the UK, but this is an illusion. The UK has remained outside the single European currency, there are francophiles in the German government, which will counterbalance any anglophilia of the new chancellor, and the UK government has closer intellectual ties with US democrats than with European social democrats.

Moses Blair and his promised Euroland

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, has argued for the need for the UK to be at the center of Europe, but Europe's center has suffered problems. There appears to be an expectation in the UK that membership of European monetary union is inevitable, though it may not be popular, but this could change if the project loses momentum. Blair is presenting problems in the European Union (EU) as opportunities, such as the opportunity to reform the European commission. There may still be obstacles which prevent Blair from achieving his vision.
