Through the labyrinth

Article Abstract:

The Planet Earth Gallery at the Earth Centre, UK, incorporates an integrated solution for cooling, ventilation and supplementary heating. The approach is based on a 1.6 meter high concrete labyrinth under the floor of the gallery, a major function of which is to provide cooling air to the gallery spaces above. The underground air-handling unit steers the air-flow from the labyrinth to outlets at either high or low levels in the galleries. It is particularly beneficial for hot nights when the temperature does not drop enough to cool the building.

IT finds a historic context

Article Abstract:

A report sponsored by Lucent Technologies and supported by English Heritage concludes that historic buildings could be adapted for use as offices without any long-term damage to their original structures. The publication, entitled 'Heritage and technology: new ways of working in historic buildings', also focuses on information technology and suggests ways in which modern equipment can be sympathetically integrated into an historic setting.
