Tilting the scales

Article Abstract:

It is possible that the single European currency has already had a significant impact on Asia, even though it has not yet been launched. Some currency analysts believe that the creation of the single European currency could have indirectly been responsible for Asia's currency crisis. It is widely anticipated that the euro will be a strong and credible currency, and it is set to become one of the three main reserve currencies. The dollar and the yen could be at the start of a lengthy period of downwards readjustment.

Strong medicine

Article Abstract:

The economic policies of former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher could offer a valuable model to Asia. She abolished excessive regulation, opened the UK to international competition, privatized state-owned concerns and sought foreign investment. These strategies initially created more economic problems, but she persevered. She has left the UK with a legacy of economic growth which is among the highest in the European Union and an unemployment rate of only 6%, compared with the European Union average of 11%.

Long-term approach

Article Abstract:

European companies are eagerly trying to acquire assets in Asia because prices are very low. They are expecting the economy to recover and they want a share of the profits. BASF paid $600 million for an animal-feed additive company while Tesco bought a controlling share of Lotus for $180 million. German firms are especially keen to invest because they believe the region, and in particular, Korea, is set for dynamic growth. U.S. companies are holding back until prices are cheaper.
