Tobacco: part 1

Article Abstract:

UK tobacco sales reached 12,317 million pounds sterling in 1997, with cigarette sales accounting for 11,493 million pounds sterling to represent 93.3% of the total market. Tobacco sales are highly taxed, encouraging consumers to purchase lower priced brands or duty-free tobacco. Sales of tobacco products are anticipated to increase 4.9% by 2002, valuing the market at 12,921 million pounds sterling, although changes in tax duties could have a dramatic effect on expected market value. Pressure from anti-smoking groups and government health policies will help reduce smoking.
