Tobacco products in Spain

Article Abstract:

Volume sales of tobacco products in Spain in 1996 reached 2.1 million packs of pipe tobacco, 12 million packs of hand-rolling tobacco, 710 million cigars and just over 3,600 million packs of cigarettes. Retail sales of tobacco products were worth about Ptas786,000 million in 1996. Light cigarettes accounted for 69% of sales and dark cigarettes 31%, with light cigarette imports accounting for 1.6% of consumption. The state-owned Tabacalera company controls the market despite liberalization. Nearly 3,600 million packs of cigarettes were produced in 1996.

Spain's Tabacalera falters

Article Abstract:

Tabacalera SA made profits valued at $111 million, in 1997, on sales worth some $640 million. The sale of the tobacco company will lead to it losing its sales monopoly of tobacco goods, in mainland Spain. Demand for Tabacalera shares where adversely affected following the government's announcement it intended to privatise Endsea, the electric utility, worth $8.9 billion. Underwriters of Tabacalera shares lost $17.5 million when the share price declined by 11.5%, in the week to Apr. 27, 1998. The sale of 52.3% of Tabacalera raised some $1.85 billion.

Poland: Altadis Polska, DML promote French contacts

Article Abstract:

In partnership with consultancy firm, DML Conseil, Altadis Polska (the Polish subsidiary of French and Spanish tobacco group, Altadis) contacted more than 1,000 companies in France while around 40 Polish firms have been identified in Radom, the city where Seita (which merged with Tabacalera to give birth to Altadis) injected US$ 120mn in 1995. Up to now, 250 potential job creations have been identified in the Radom area, toughly affected by industrial restructure, with a 20% unemployment rate.
