EUROPE: REORGANISATION AT CONTINENTAL

Article Abstract:

Works council chairman Alfred Artmauer describes as the "worst case scenario" the decision taken by the supervisory board of Semperit, the Austrian subsidiary of Continental. The production of lorry tyres in Traiskirchen will be reduced from 720,000 to less than 600,000 units in 2002, while that of car tyres will be cut by half in 2002 from 1.8mn-2mn in 2001. The cost-cutting programme of Semperit had counted on savings in a double-digit percentage range from the transfer of three production machines from the Herstal factory in Belgium. However, only one of the machines was allocated for Traiskirchen, while another one goes to a US factory of Continental and one is mothballed. At the same time, Semperit's two-phase production process is to be moved to the Czech tyre factory in Otrokovice .
