Article Abstract:

Art museums have a number of roles, as is shown by an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Museums can be mausoleums, cathedrals, hoarders, and playgrounds for plutocrats. The Exhibition is entitled 'The Museum as Muse: Artists reflect', and has been assembled by the curator of painting and sculpture, Kynaston McShine, prior to his retirement. Museums have become much more common in the US, Japan and Europe since 1970 and this has changed their role, as well as the content of the work that they display, with a strong emphasis on contemporary art.

See you in court

Article Abstract:

A dispute has arisen in New York about an art exhibition scheduled to open at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in Oct 1999. New York mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, claims that the exhibition contains sick material and has stated that financial support for the museum from the city could end if the exhibition is shown. There have been attempts to seek a compromise, such as removing some works of art from the exhibition, but the case has also gone to court. This example shows that art can still be shocking.
