Tunky defends measures to protect manufacturers

Article Abstract:

Indonesian Minister of Trade and Industry Tunky Ariwibowo denied that the country's trade policies are protectionist. In a recent press briefing, Tunky stressed that the Indonesian government has not abandoned policies aimed at deregulating industries and promoting free trade. He stated that the tax break for PT Timor Putra Nasional and tariff protection for the Chandra Asri petrochemical venture were necessary because of current conditions.

Jakarta gets reform rolling for state-controled banks

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's economic reform policies kick off with its plan to merge four state banks into one mega bank. The state banks to be merged include Bank Dagang Negara, Bank Pembangunan Indonesia, Bank Bumi Daya and Bank Ekspor-Impor Indonesia. The planned merger will reduce the number of state-owned banks in Indonesia from seven to four. The planned bank has not been given a name yet.

Jakarta quietly buffers Chandra Asri with surcharge on propylene imports

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian government has imposed a 20% surcharge on propylene imports in an apparent effort to protect the new Chandra Asri Petrochemical Complex from competition. The new surcharge signifies a marked turnaround for the Indonesian government, which had earlier announced that it would not provide Chandra Asri with protection other than the 5% surcharge in force at the time.
