UK: FALL IN SALES OF LIFE ASSURANCE AND PENSIONS

Article Abstract:

During the first quarter of 2000, sales of new life assurance, pensions and collective investment were down 2%. ABI figures show sales totalled GB[pound] 13bn but this was down GB[pound] 260mn than for the same period last year. The fall was blamed on a rush for personal equity plans and tax-exempt special savings accounts. Delaying the introduction of the stakeholder pension until April 2001 could also have contributed. Stakeholder pensions should help contribute to a regular increase in pensions savings.

UK: ABBEY NATIONAL TO RECRUIT MORE ADVISERS

Article Abstract:

Abbey National will hire a further 500 managers and financial advisers to offer customers investment services in branches throughout the UK. Customers can meet face-to-face with the advisers to discuss their life assurance, investment and pension requirements. Abbey's new business grew 34% a year on average during 1998-2000, says an Abbey official. Customers are known to prefer direct contact with advisers, especially when considering complex products, he claims. Abbey aims to expand its face-to-face operations in the UK, claims an observer. Other leading companies, such as Sun Life of Canada and Britannic, are cutting their adviser sales teams.
