UK: GREATER LONGEVITY FOR SOUTHERNERS

Article Abstract:

Life expectancy for those who live in the south of England is longer than for those from the north, according to Office for National Statistics figures based on a survey conducted from 1995-1997. The survey indicates that health, region and social deprivation are connected, and that where people live makes a difference. Women who live in East Dorset, in the south, have a life expectancy of 83.5 years, versus 8.1 years less for women in Glasgow, Scotland. Men in Chiltern, Buckinghamshire, in the south, have a life expectancy of 78.4 years, versus men in Glasgow, whose life expectancy is ten years less.

UK: ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN TO REDUCE NORTH/SOUTH DIVIDE

Article Abstract:

The British North/South divide could be addressed over the long term by a downturn in the new economy sectors, according to Business Strategies economic consultancy. Slower growth in the communications, information technology, and electronics markets could narrow the divide. UK economic growth in 2001 is projected at 2.6%, down from 2.9% in 2000.
