Recapitalizing damaged banks and initiating structural reform may ameliorate credit crunch

Article Abstract:

The Southeast Asian region will continue to experience the effects of the currency crisis though some countries such as Korea and Indonesia have made progress with foreign-debt servicing and improved stock market performance. Measures must be taken to recapitalize local banks hard hit by the crisis and necessary measures be made to account for losses incurred. Lessons can be learned from past economic crises in Latin America, which have recovered through government regulation and reform.
