US banks hit summit in record year for UK M&A

Article Abstract:

A total of 14 deals valued at 40,656 million pounds sterling enabled financial advisor Goldman Sachs to top the league table for UK advisors during 1999. The 21.1 billion pounds sterling take-over of mobile phone operator Orange by German telecommunications firm Mannesmann was the largest single transaction carried out in the UK during 1999 and Goldman Sachs was the advising company. The highest number of deals was undertaken by Close Brothers, with 29 deals closed during 1999.

Law firm Hammond Suddards reported a 30% rise in income for the year ending April 1998. The company was also listed among the UK's most profitable top 12. Richard Burns is the company's national head of corporate finance, with responsibility for the Manchester, London and Leeds offices. Recent contracts include an advisory role for Murray Johnstone on the 94 million pound sterling management buy-out of Ineso Group.
