Uncle Sam v Big Tobacco

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration is seeking to recover public health costs from tobacco companies and this is an offense against democracy. The isssue should be tackled by legislation. There are other pleasures that lead to health problems, such as the consumption of foods with a high sugar and fat content. Smokers are also more likely to die young and so save costs of pensions and medical costs associated with old age. Smoking tends to kill those who have completed the productive part of their lives so smokers are more likely to contribute and less likely to receive benefits.

Article Abstract:

The US tobacco industry faces more legal action with the Engle case, a class action case in Miami, Florida. National class action cases have tended to fail since courts see US smokers as too diverse a group to be classed together, but this may not be the case for the Engle suit. Tobacco companies argue that the possible dangers of cigarettes have been made public since the 1950s, but the number of settlements already made by the industry could be seen as an admission of guilt.
