Uncle Sam's war on drugs

Article Abstract:

Mexico has carried out a number of operations to control the narcotics trade, but critics argue that not enough efforts have been made. Examples include the dropping of some charges against the Amecuza brothers due to lack of evidence. Critics argue that Mexico should be decertified by the US for not making enough of an effort. Mexico is the most important route for drugs going into the US. The Mexican government opposes the process of certification by the US, and sees demand for drugs as a problem, as well as supply.

Article Abstract:

Bill Clinton's controversial re-certification of Mexico's drug-fighting efforts alerted Congress to the serious problems of both Mexican corruption, and the uselessness of the US certification program. Part of US controversy is scapegoating foreigners for US failures at curbing demand.
