Unfair protection

Article Abstract:

Anti-dumping measures are increasingly being used, and there is concern that this disguises a trend toward protectionism. These measures are particularly used by the US, and there have been 25 new cases to Nov 1998, and increase on 1997 when there were 16 cases for the whole of the year. These measures tend to stay in place long after the initial reason for using them has disappeared, and they may also involve large duties. The argument that anti-dumping measures prevent predatory pricing is dubious in economic terms.

Back from the brink: Mexico's financial crisis was different from Asia's but it holds valuable lessons

Article Abstract:

Mexico's financial crisis of 1995 was followed one year later by a healthy recovery. Economists do not foresee so rosy a scenario for East Asian economies currently in crisis. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) prescription for Asia, though criticized, may be part of the answer.
