University library extension gives 24-hour service: Alec French Partnership's extension to the University of Bath's 1960s library has a visible, welcoming presence 24 hours a day

Article Abstract:

The new extension to the University of Bath library has been designed by Alec French Partnership, through a limited competition. There was a need for a 24-hour study centre and a requirement to improve the quality of the environment and its energy performance. The new lightweight transparent envelope is supported by a steel balanced cantilever structure and external glazing draws attention to this. Areas of etched glass, fixed brise-soleil and internal light shelves were introduced to shade the south facing interior, and an air-displacement system maintains a comfortable working environment.

Complementing the past with a modern identity

Article Abstract:

The extension of the Hope Street Library in Falkirk also presented an opportunity to undertake a major refurbishment programme. The extension had to complement the existing B-listed building and harmonise with the nearby Roman Catholic Church. The facade is a narrow stone-fronted gable with a glazed link to the existing building. The cast stone blocks will weather in the same way as the stone of the original library.

Article Abstract:

A fundraising drive is initiated by two Britishers to revamp Alvar Aalto's important library, a magnum opus in Vyborg, the second-largest city in Finland. The library was heavily damaged following the take-over of Vyborg by the Soviets after World War II, but architects are convinced that the library can be reinstated to its original shape and condition.
